Brown with Black Polka Dots
February 12th, 2014

My first memory of choosing the colors for my bedroom was when I was about 6 years old.  Some of you may remember the letter-stamping label makers.  There were a variety of color tapes that you fed through the letter- stamper.  You would dial to select a letter and then press really hard to make an impression of the letter.  I would venture to say this could be the precursor to texting.  My favorite tape was Brown with Black Polka Dots.  I loved it so much that I asked my mom if I could decorate my new room with those colors.  So we did!

As I look back at the little girl who wanted her room decorated Brown with Black Polka dots, I recognize the intuitive nature of the child.  Through my practice of Feng Shui,  I have learned that this childhood intuition was a natural understanding of what I needed energetically.

So what is this practice of Feng Shui? How does it inform our lives?  What is the importance and why has it been around for thousands of years?

This is what I ponder…

Let’s examine this idea that we all possess a natural understanding or intuition of what we need energetically through the prism of Feng Shui.

A basic principle of Feng Shui includes the 5 elements:  Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Tree.  As in nature, these elements work influentially with one another.  There is the constant moil to find balance. The same is true in our daily lives. Knowing and understanding how the 5 elements are present in our environment can help to guide the way we create balance in our own space.

When I was a little girl, my family moved quite a bit.  Before the age of 8 I had lived in about 7 different homes.  Upon examination, a young child choosing to decorate her room with Brown with Black Polka Dots demonstrates a craving for a sense of feeling grounded. The colors and design represent the element Earth.  Another layer to Feng Shui is that it helps us understand the guiding elements that influence our character or the way we energetically navigate through life.  My character element is Tree.  Trees in nature need a place to grow their roots in order to survive and thrive.  A child with the character element of Tree would need the same support created in their environment.

As you begin to understand how the elements relate to you and which elements support you in your environment, you can begin to implement design concepts of Feng Shui and use them as the foundation to create the balance necessary for harmony.

As a Feng Shui practitioner, I am fascinated with discovering how to help you transform¬†a room, office, or entire home. ¬† How do you live or work? ¬†What do you have too much of? ¬†What is missing? ¬†These are just some of the questions I begin asking and observing to best inform how a space is to be designed. ¬†I use multiple concepts of Feng Shui to determine everything from the optimal colors and wall art to the furniture placement and design.¬† ¬†It is my passion. ¬†As one client recently shared, “I was sitting and writing. I looked up and gazed at my kitchen. It is everything and nothing. Everything flows‚Ķit is beautiful.”

Life is filled with messages through metaphors. They are all around us, speaking to us. Feng Shui engages the messages on all levels and listens and responds. I loved this article simply because we can all relate to childhood whimsy and realize, it wasn’t whimsy at all. Thanks Meryl!

Ahead of your time even back then! It strikes me that the stark black and brown motif has become very popular now. Are we all striving for some grounding in a world where we live much of our lives in the internet’s ether? You always make me think!
